CHIGWELL RIDING TRUST -
was the first riding centre for people with
special needs in the world. It has been
established in Chigwell for over 45 years.
Riding instruction is given to people of all
ages and abilities. The riding centre has
approximately 160 riders each week. As one of
the leading specialised riding centres in the
country, Chigwell Riding Trust not only benefits
people with special needs but also the entire
community, giving opportunities for
volunteering, school participation and practical
experience for children and adults working with
people and animals. An organisation such as this
is wholly dependant on the goodwill of the
community without which Chigwell Riding Trust
would not exist. To offer the wonderful
facilities and high standard of riding that the
Trust does involves a tremendous expense.
Chigwell Riding Trust receives no state aid
whatsoever and all funds have to be raised by
the charity which does not employ any paid
fundraisers. Staff numbers are kept to an
absolute minimum and voluntary help is used

COMMUNITY FIRST
RESPONDERS IN EPPING, LOUGHTON AND NAZEING
- Who are we? What do we do? How do we do it?
You can do it. We are volunteers (aged over 18)
from many walks of life. We give as much time as
we are able, fitting in our duties around our
normal everyday lifestyle. Although most of us
have had no previous medical experience, we all
undergo specialist training with the prime
object of saving lives, as well as being able to
support ambulance crews and paramedics in their
work. The training comprises the operation of a
defibrillator machine and the use of oxygen, as
well as achieving a high degree of competence in
CPR (chest compressions and rescue breaths). We
have our own rota system whereby the ambulance
service calls us out from our homes when they
receive certain emergency 999 calls. These could
be heart attacks, strokes, epileptic seizures,
breathing difficulties etc. As the name implies
we aim to supply a First Response in our
community, if possible prior to the arrival of
the ambulance crew, and in so doing give the
patient a better chance of recovery or survival.
We operate on a local basis, using our own
vehicles, and are sent to destinations not
normally more than five minutes from our home
address. Our unit has three sections, based in
Epping Loughton and Nazeing, and have been operating for
over six years, in which time we have helped
local people by answering literally hundreds of
calls. Our ultimate aim is to give 24/7 cover,
but for this we need more volunteers. We meet on
a fortnightly basis on Thursdays, for
continuation training and interaction, at St
Margaret’s Hospital, Epping. The next training
course is on Saturday, March 3, and
Saturday and Sunday, March 10 and 11. For further
details, ring Sandra Newman on 01992 572545.

CROFTON SINGERS
- a friendly chamber choir based in Woodford
Green. New members of all ages are always
welcome. There are no formal auditions;
selection is by mutual agreement after a few
rehearsals. The choir has a very wide and varied
repertoire including sacred, secular, classical
and modern music: from Bach to Bernstein, Tallis
to Cole Porter, Rachmaninov to Vaughan Williams,
eight-part Mediæval Latin Mass to the close
harmony of the Barber Shop. The choir performs
locally three or four times a year and has
raised thousands of pounds for charity over the
years. The Crofton Singers was founded in 1947
in response to the wish of pupils leaving
Bancroft’s School (then for boys) and Loughton
High School for Girls (now Roding Valley High
School Performing Arts College) to continue
their singing. Hence the name: BanCROFT plus
LoughtON. It has long since developed into a
mixed age choir open to all, though the historic
connection with Bancroft’s means the choir has
the use of a comfortable music room with grand
piano for its weekly rehearsals. There is a high
standard of musicianship but the choir does
emphasise that while all members are sight
readers there is a broad range of experience and
ability. The choir has an established reputation
in unaccompanied singing. Rehearsals are on
Thursday evenings during school term time
(8pm-10pm) in the music room of Bancroft's
School, High Road, Woodford Green, Essex, IG8
0RF. The choir recently appointed a new Musical
Director, Simon Pusey, so this is an exciting
time for the choir. For more details, pictures

CROSSROADS CARE
REDBRIDGE, EPPING & HARLOW -
provides a high quality respite service to
carers of all ages. Part of a national network
of local charities and Britain’s leading support
for carers and those they care for, Crossroads
Care is both a voluntary organisation and a
registered charity. The organisation has over 35
years of experience, nationally, and at a local
level over 25 years. Crossroads Care Redbridge,
Epping & Harlow understands the stresses and
strains that carers face daily. Its role is to
help relieve those stresses and burdens to help
carers to have a life outside of their caring
role. The trained team of professional staff
provide a personalised service to meet each
carer’s individual needs. These needs may be in
the form of practical help, personal care or
respite care. An experienced and trained carer
support worker will take over from the carer
giving them a break from their caring role. The
organisation talks to carers about what sort of
support they need, when it is best to visit and
how long each visit should be. The trained carer
support workers also regularly take out those
they care for, to the park, garden centre, shops
or somewhere of interest to them. During visits,
the carer may choose to attend an appointment,
go shopping, visit a friend or relative or
simply have a rest. Crossroads Care provides a
huge range of services for those who care,
including those caring for children with
disabilities and adults with disabilities to
people with dementia and those with a terminal
illness. As well as providing help in the home,
Crossroads Care runs a Homeshare Project, a
unique and popular scheme providing respite to
small groups of people with dementia in the
Homesharers own home. For more about how

EAST LONDON AND ESSEX
ORGAN SOCIETY
- is in its 30th year. Founded by budding
electronic organ/keyboard players and encouraged
by their organ teacher, Martyn Rice, and club
president David Thomas, the society was started
in July 1982. The first venue, like so many
other organ clubs, was in a public house, the
Maypole in Barkingside. In the early days
members entertained themselves, playing organs
brought along by the president from the local
music shop. Members took along 'eats' they had
made themselves and a good time was had by all.
The society started with a membership of 53 and
this number soon rose to 64. The pub soon became
unsatisfactory so a search was made to find a
new meeting place. Wanstead Library, having a
hall, the Churchill Room, looked promising. The
society has met at the hall since 1983. The
society's first artistes were unknown players at
that time. They included current president David
Thomas, Danny O'Sullivan and Mark Brown. As the
membership grew, some professional organists
were booked to entertain members. Artiste fees
were between £80 and £100 for a concert. Some
of the first real professionals were Steve
Lowdell, Byron Jones, Robert Beadle and Harry
Jackson. Today's committee still endeavours to
engage the very best artistes, including some
up-and-coming new faces. It is the club's aim to
encourage new talent as well as supporting the
more established electronic organists. Today,
because of its roots, the society still holds
one Members Night a year where members
entertain. A newsletter is produced every month
with a brief resume of the previous month's
concert followed by details of the artiste due
to play on the night. It also includes
information regarding concerts at other local
clubs, plus other items relating to organ and
keyboards which may be of interest to members.
The club meets on the second Wednesday of the
month at 7.50pm in the Churchill Room, Wanstead
Library, Spratt Hall Road. Annual subscription
is £7 (under-16s £1); member's admission is
£5 (under-16s £1). Visitor's admission £7.

FAMILY CARE COUNSELLING
SERVICE
- based in Waltham Abbey, Family Care (a
registered charity) exists to provide a
professional counselling service to the
community we serve. There are times in many
people’s lives when they feel unable to cope.
They may be experiencing tension and anxiety,
suffering depression, having marital
difficulties or finding it hard to come to terms
with bereavement. Whilst counselling makes no
claims to offer quick or even easy solutions to
life’s difficulties, it does offer a safe
containing and confidential place in which to
explore and face these issues. We provide short
and long-term counselling to adults aged over 18
and to couples. No-one is denied help through
lack of money but we do expect a realistic
contribution according to means. The actual
amount is agreed between client and counsellor
at the first session. If you feel you could
benefit from counselling, ring 01992 788499 or

FISU MEDITATION
- Foundation for International Spiritual
Unfoldment, or FISU for short, is an
international school that teaches the art of
meditation and spiritual unfoldment. FISU has
centres close to Epping and 29 more around the
UK. One of the most enjoyable aspects of
meditation is the deep relaxation experienced by
the body and the central nervous system.
Meditation soothes away the stresses and strains
of everyday life. In an effortless way it
teaches you how to relax and it only takes 20-30
minutes twice daily. Through the deep relaxation
experienced during meditation, the physical body
enjoys a level of relaxation well beyond the
lowest level of rest in sleep. This is deeply
enriching to the central nervous system which in
turn improves your health. Although relaxation
can be achieved by many methods, most of them
temporary, our system of meditation working on
the three aspects of man – body, mind and
spirit, creates harmony between these levels and
we therefore find self-integration. Naturally,
there are endless benefits when all aspects of
us are working in harmony with each other. This
will promote better health, prevent illness and
resolve mental and emotional problems and those
of the heart. We also become so much more
content and happier! For more information, ring

GROWING KIDS PROJECT -
is an innovative growing and community learning
space based at The Allotments, Roding Lane
North, Woodford Green, Essex, IG8 8LZ, where
children and their carers can have fun whilst
learning about food growing and the environment
in which they live. The project's aim is to
provide the children, families and those
responsible for their care living in the
Woodford area of the London borough of Redbridge
a better start in life. Its objectives are to
provide a teaching and learning space for
children and young people to grow their own
fruit and vegetables, to bring an understanding
about where the produce comes from, to engage in
practical physical exercise, to promote a
positive community atmosphere where all can work
together, to eat locally grown fresh fruit and
vegetables, changing attitudes about food and
maybe trying something new to eat, and to enjoy
being in the outside environment showing
awareness and respect for wildlife that inhabits
the environment. The project wants to see all
those that are involved making healthy lifestyle
choices - a healthy balanced diet, regular
exercise and promoting community cohesion. All
of this as they gain the knowledge needed to
produce their crops and show respect for the
outside environment. Staff are always happy to
discuss the learning experiences so that
sessions can be tailor-made to the specific
needs of those involved. All Growing Kids staff
comply with Safeguarding Policy and Procedures
and have all completed satisfactory CRB checks.

LEAGUE OF FRIENDS OF ST
MARGARET’S HOSPITAL AND COMMUNITY -
The charity has long been a support to services
at the Epping hospital. Over the years many
‘extras’ have been provided for various wards
and departments, and requests regularly come for
more from help to provide Christmas cheer on
wards to its latest huge project – the provision
of hoists above beds in the wards in the new
hospital building. These efforts need support
from local people, many of whom have or will
benefit from St Margaret’s whether as an
in-patient or out-patient, carer or relative.
New members are sought. The charity also wants
to raise awareness of its activities to attract
donations. Some very welcome gifts have come
from people who prefer not to receive presents
at birthdays or anniversaries but ask for
donations to the League. Some of the charity's
larger provisions to the hospital have been made
possible through bequests and trusts. To become
a Friend, help with fundraising activities, give
raffle prizes and suggest ideas for events, ring
